Woman killed on Leeds canal towpath

A murder investigation has been launched following the death of a woman in West Leeds.

A 53-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of killing the woman, who was attacked off Canal Road, Armley, yesterday afternoon. He was arrested at the scene.

The 38-year-old woman was taken to Leeds General Infirmary, but died shortly after arriving.

West Yorkshire Police have confirmed that the man was being questioned by detectives.

Detective Chief Inspector Jim Dunkerley, of West Yorkshire Police Protective Services (Crime), said: “We are treating the woman’s death as murder and the suspect remains in custody at this time. A forensic post mortem is due to be carried out today.

“We have spoken to a number of members of the public who witnessed the incident and gave first aid to the injured woman but we would still like to hear from any other witnesses or anyone with any information that could assist the investigation.”
