Robbie Butterworth:West Yorkshire derby preview

Wakefield Trinity’s Utility back Robbie Butterworth is expecting a physical clash against the Huddersfield Giants at Laund Hill tomorrow.

“You know what you’re getting when you play Huddersfield, they’re big down the middle and like to grind teams down”

The home side will be wary of Butterworth who’s impressed for the first team this pre-season contributing with the boot in our victory at Headingley on Boxing Day.

“When we scored them tries Gasky (Lee Gaskell) just looked at me and said you can have them if you fancy it”

“The atmosphere of the home crowd booing me even in a friendly was a great moment one I’ll never forget.”

In the off season Robbie was rewarded with a pro contract for his hard work in the reserves last year.

“I did it the hard way in the reserves for a year and thankfully Mash gave me the opportunity of a contract”.

”I’ve been here a long time, it meant a lot to me and my family”

As well as representing the reserves, Butterworth joined his Trinity teammate Dane Windrow over the Pennines at Oldham on loan where the pair impressed the Roughyeds faithful. Butterworth believes the reserve grade is “massive for players who aren’t making the first team” but also “gives the academy lads a taste of what’s to come.”

The utility back is under no illusions how difficult breaking into the first team will be in the future.

“I’ve got to work hard in training, listen to the senior players and what my coaches are saying.”

“For me personally this season I want to play in Super League even if it’s just once”

As for the reserves he’s hoping the squad can improve on last year’s success of reaching the Grand final despite coming up short to Wigan.

“Hopefully this year we can go one further this time and win the Grand Final”
