Yorkshire farmers have been warned by police about a card services scam.
Four farmers have been targeted in the last few days and Neighbourhood Police Teams in Crossgates, Whinmoor, Temple Newsam, Garforth, Kippax, Swillington and Methley.
According to the North Yorkshire Police, the scam has involved farming customers being called, by someone claiming to be from card services, explaining that there had been fraudulent activity on their card and asking them to then call the number on the back of their card to discuss the fraud.
But, rather than transfer them, the caller then does not disconnect the call and when the victim believes they are then speaking to their bank they are still speaking to the fraudster.
They are then advised that, for security reasons, a new bank account has been opened for them and they need to transfer all of their funds to the new account.
A spokesperson from North Yorkshire Police said:
“Banks and the police will never contact you to ask you to transfer funds or hand over your cards or money. If you get an unsolicited phone call, be alert. If you are suspicious of the caller, end the call and call back on the number on the back of your card or from one of your statements.
“Be aware that the phone line can still be open when you’ve put down the receiver. Call back from a different phone or call someone you trust first to ensure the call was disconnected.”
