A local man in his fifties died  after being found in the River Aire in Leeds city centre early this morning.

Police were called to the river at Neville Street around 5:30am after the man’s body was seen by members of the public.

He was recovered from the water and attempts were made by ambulance staff to resuscitate him before he was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Maria Martinez, 41, works at Golf café bar opposite. She said: “I saw four ambulances, they were everywhere. People were running and looking as I was on my way to work.”

Daniel Mills, 40, drives a water taxi in the area and said: “Tragedies around the water happen quite often. A man was killed just before Christmas and it was horrible.”

Police say the man’s family has been informed and they are not treating the death as suspicious.
