York’s tree planting initiative, Treemendous, planted 400 trees on an acre of York University land, Diamond Wood, on Sunday, March 15 2020.
Treemendous aims to plant 50,000 trees, hoping to have achieved their goal in a year and a half, to promote York as an environmentally-friendly city.
This is part of Woodland Trust‘s Northern Forest initiative, which aims to plant 50 million trees between Liverpool and Hull.
However, York City Council has a one-for-one tree policy – one new sapling is planted for every one mature tree cut down.
Councillor Mark Warters, Independent of York Council, said: “[The council is] hiding behind these tree initiatives- they could plant all these 400 trees today and another 400 could be cut down tomorrow.”
