Transfer Deadline Day: A Yorkshire Roundup

  • reporter

The transfer window closed last night at 7pm, solidifying the teams for the rest of the season. There was a varying amount of movement throughout the window by Yorkshire clubs, with some doing more business than others.

In the Premier League so far this season, it has been a mix of performances for Leeds United. They currently sit just above relegation places, with a squad which needed strengthening, especially in midfield and up front.

The only signing in which Leeds brought in was Facundo Buonanotte, the Argentine striker on loan from Brighton.

The Whites were interested in the striker in the initial transfer window until he decided to join Chelsea on a loan deal, where his loan came to an early end.

Winger Jack Harrison, who returned to the club after 2 years on loan at Everton at the beginning of the season, was the first player sent out on a loan deal.

Harrison is spending the rest of the season at Serie A side Fiorentina, with the deal containing an option to buy clause.

Young striker Harry Gray was also sent out on loan, to Rotherham United in League One.

There was consistent interest from Leeds throughout the window, specifically in striker Jorgen Strand Larsen from Wolves. However, an offer was accepted and he joined Crystal Palace instead.

Championship side Sheffield United have had a rocky season, after just failing to reach promotion to the Premier League last season. The side sit 17th in the Championship, and certainly needed some strengthening if they want to have a chance at promotion.

The club kicked off their transfer window with the signing of Dutch right-back Ki-Jana Hoever on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Right at the end of the window, they made some moves which will certainly allow for a strengthened squad.

Sheffield United pulled one of the biggest moves on deadline day, with the loan signing of 30 year old midfielder Kalvin Phillips from Manchester City.

Phillips has struggled for game time at City, and had unsuccessful loan periods at both West Ham and Ipswich. However, he still brings a lot of experience into the squad, on a national and global level.

In order to further improve their midfield, the Blades permanently signed Joe Rothwell from Rangers, on a deal for 18 months.

The signing of Leo Hjelde from Sunderland on a loan, is also certain to strengthen Sheffield United’s squad in their bid for promotion.

In League One, Huddersfield Town sit in 6th place, with hopes for promotion on the horizon.

By bringing in 3 players in on the final day, Huddersfield will hope for an improvement to their chances of Championship football next season.

The loan signings of Wrexham striker Ryan Harding and Swansea’s Bobby Wales will give Huddersfield more options up front, and hopefully, more goals.

Newport goalkeeper Nik Tzanev also came through on a free transfer, boosting hopes for more clean sheets.

This is a continuation of the additions they made earlier in the window, with the signing of Jak Alnwick, Cameron Humphreys and Bali Mumba.
