The Brownlee brothers bring the triathlon to Yorkshire

Triathon enthusiasts will get a chance to test their mettle against two of the regions’ top athletes.

On Sunday Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee are hosting the Macmillan Brownlee Tri at one of West Yorkshire’s most scenic locations, Harewood House.

triathletes and complete novices alike. The event will have sprint and super-sprint triathlon distances for individuals, as well as a youth and junior super-sprint challenge, and a sprint relay for teams.

The races are now full but for those who’d rather watch from the side-lines there’s also a full entertainment programme for spectators and supporters.

The brothers say they are keen to give something back not just to Yorkshire but to the sport as well. Gold medallist Alistair said: “We’ve always loved triathlons since we started as eight year olds and its fantastic to see more people getting involved and enjoying it.”

Their success in the London 2012 Olympics and the recent Commonwealth Games in Glasgow has meant that the Brownlees are quickly becoming famous figures in Yorkshire but they say it takes some getting used to.

Jonathan said: “I find it weird every single time someone recognises me, why do people want a photo with me or an autograph? I’m only a triathlete. But endurance sport really keeps your feet on the ground, you have to keep training and if you miss any sessions you find out pretty quickly.”

The first race of the Brownlee Tri starts at 9.30am and the Brownlees themselves will be taking part in the sprint team relay at 11am.
