Strugglers Gillingham keen to put pressure on table topping Wigan

By Robert Droko

Coming off an impressive 1-0 victory against Peterborough at the weekend, managerless Gillingham will be looking to end Wigan’s four match unbeaten run.

Currently in 22nd place in League one, Gillingham are potentially three points away from escaping from a relegation position.

The Gills come into the match only winning two of their last five fixtures whilst table-topping Wigan have won their last four.

Keen to manage Gillingham on a full time contract, caretaker manager Steve Lovell will be desperate to put another victory under his belt.

Speaking positively about the visitors, Steve Lovell said: “They are a very good side and it will be a challenge for us.”

Gillingham will look for inspiration from the return of star striker Tom Evans, after serving a suspension.

However after dismantling Southend 3-0 on the weekend, Wigan will need to carry on their good form away at Gillingham. Wigan’s attack is led by top goal-scorer Nick Powell, who is currently on seven goals.

Talking about Wigan’s star man, Manager Paul Cook stated: “In certain situations he’s nigh on unplayable.”

Gillingham come into the match without Alex Lacey (Knee), Ben Nugent (Foot) and Luke O’Neill (hamstring).

Wigan are without Christian Walton (ankle), Craig Morgan (hip) and Shaun MacDonald (broken leg).

This meeting comes at an interesting time as Wigan want to continue their impressive unbeaten run.
