It’s not usually the case that you win all but one of your games in the league and don’t get promoted, unfortunately this is what happened to the Rugby Union side at Leeds Trinity University.
The Yorkshire based University team are only one of seven sides that make up the British Universities and College Sport (BUCS) Rugby Union 2016-2017 – Northern 6A league. The league did originally have eight teams, however Salford continuously failed to field teams therefore left the league handing points to teams that didn’t have to play them because of this.
They also competed in the British Universities and College Sport (BUCS) Rugby Union Northern Conference Plate, they were disappointed to go out in the last 16 of this, although they did go out to the eventually overall winners.
The men’s side came in a close second to a controversial Liverpool 4th Team. The Merseyside University managed to secure promotion within a year of the team starting and done so with having only played five out of a total seven games. There extra win came from two walkover victories against Salford’s second team and Wrexham Glyndwr’s first team. Below is a detailed league of how it finished at the end of the season:
The league finished with the key result coming when Liverpool beat Leeds Trinity 29-0 in what was a league winning game. The Yorkshire side had a better point’s difference at the end of the season, however unluckily this game between the two giants was pinnacle.
The Leeds Trinity side were hard done by this, however they are still classing it as a successful season and are already looking forward to the next season and what the new players have to offer. In an Interview with Yorkshire Voice, key player and second row for the Leeds team, Aidan Hayes-Wormall told us that the loss of some key third year players for the team will have an effect on the side as they are big hitters and three or four of them have a really good bond which mentally motivates the rest of the squad.
