Motorbike-riding robber threatens supermarket cash delivery

by Elizabeth Archer

An armed robber threatened cash delivery staff with a handgun yesterday after riding into a supermarket car park on a motorbike.

Security staff were restocking the cash machine at Sainsbury’s in Moor Allerton when the robber followed them into a secure area and threatened to shoot them if they refused to give him the money.

The staff tried to shut the door and trapped the man’s arm, but he managed to escape and drove away.

Detective Sergeant Mark Atkinson, of Leeds District CID, said: “Although nothing was stolen due to the quick thinking of the cash delivery staff, this was a very distressing incident for them.”

Police say the robber’s jacket was very distinctive and can clearly be seen on CCTV images.

It has been described as a black motorcycle jacket, which had white “Alpinestars” logos on it and white details on the forearms and shoulders.

The robber’s motorbike is also distinctive and was a dark blue model, possibly made by Yamaha.

Police are urging anyone who recognises the images to contact DS Atkinson at Leeds District CID at Elland Road via 101 or call the independent crime-fighting charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
