Local charity wins community award for tackling isolation.

A Horsforth-based charity has been recognised for its work supporting people experiencing social isolation in its community.

The Horsforth Shed, based at St James’ Church on Low Lane, was awarded the 2025 Heart of Horsforth Community Award for its positive impact on wellbeing and community connection.

Vice Chair of Horsforth Town Council, Councillor Dowling, said: “The Horsforth Shed exemplifies community-led good practice, combining inclusive skills development with social support to deliver measurable positive impact both locally and beyond.”

Heart of Horsforth Community Award

The idea for the community shed began in 2019, when St James’ Parish Church Council decided to repurpose a redundant Scout Hut to better serve the local area. The space has since been transformed into a community workshop and became a registered charity in 2021.

The Horsforth Shed aims to reduce social isolation across Leeds, while also supporting schools and community groups by helping people develop practical skills and confidence. The workshop welcomes visitors of all backgrounds and abilities to take part in woodworking and creative activities.

One regular group that uses the space is Lighthouse West Yorkshire, a Leeds-based Christian charity supporting people experiencing homelessness, addiction, mental health difficulties and crisis. The group visits the Shed every Friday.

Founder Reverend Jon Swales MBE said: “We come to the Horsforth Shed not only to make things out of wood, but to combat isolation and loneliness by spending time together doing meaningful things.”

Tom, a regular attendee through Lighthouse, said the Shed has helped him manage social anxiety and mental health challenges.

“It’s good for mental health because it keeps your mind focused,” he said. “And it’s good for social anxiety because it’s only a small group.”
