Harehills residents today (Monday) shared their shock after a teenager has been left fighting for his life following a serious assault.
The 17-year-old boy was subjected to what police believe to be a targeted attack in Harehills Lane.
The incident happened at around 2.55pm on Sunday at the junction of Harehills Lane and York Road, near the old Shaftesbury Cinema.
Forensic teams carry out inquiries on Harehills Lane.
One resident, who did not wish to be named said: “The area has changed over the last few years.
“It’s shocking, especially for older people who hardly come out at night, but this assault shows that it can happen any time nowadays.”
Another resident added:”It’s nothing new and things like this are starting to become the norm in the area.
“But I was shocked when I heard, I have young kids and I use the shops on the lane quite a lot and I’d hate for my kids to witness anything like that.”
One woman said she hoped that the incident would lead to more cameras in the area as she no longer feels comfortable going on to Harehills Lane unless it is a necessity.
Pat Dawson, 55, of Osmondthorpe had gone out to buy pet food at the time of the incident, she said: “I noticed a lot of Police cars and when you see that you know something is wrong.
“It is quite bad on Harehills Lane, but I hope that the young lad is ok.”
The area around the old Shaftsbury Cinema was cordoned off whilst police carried out investigations.
Investigations into the attack are still ongoing and Detective Inspector Phil Jackson, of Stainbeck CID appealed for the driver of a red taxi, possibly a Vauxhall Vectra, to come forward after it was seen driving towards York Road shortly after the incident occurred.
He also said that a black male and white female, believed to be around 16 or 17 years of age, were seen running down Harehills Lane, away from York Road at the time of the assault.
