Head of CIPR highlights false representation of PR in the media

By Tom Clayton

Leeds Trinity alumna Sarah Hall spoke of the different strands of public relations as she discussed how the discipline is represented in the media.

The current president of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations used herself as an example when discussing how PR is portrayed in modern journalism and television in a talk for Leeds Trinity’s Journalism and Media Week 2018.

Hall said: “PR is depicted as glamourous and sexy, going out to events and drinking champagne – it’s not like that.

“I spend most of my time at my desk or talking to clients, but that’s what I love about it.”

The PR expert went on to discuss the importance of people using their voice through social media.

“Nowadays, people are afraid to speak up in the fear of being shot down online by keyboard warriors,” She said.

“That’s why people on the right wing’s voices are heard, because they aren’t afraid to speak out.”

In the talk, Hall also cited her time at Leeds Trinity as crucial to where she is today, saying how she has used many of the aspects learned on her course since starting in PR.

Journalism and Media Week concludes later today, with the week being capped off with creator of the Great British Bake Off Richard McKerrow giving a talk in the Mary Hallaway Lecture Hall at 3:15pm.
