Horsforth Community Cafe is tackling social isolation among the elderly with pay-as-you-feel meals made from surplus food, originally destined for landfill.
The cafe, run by volunteers, provides a warm space for connection and conversation year-round. Regular volunteer Averil said: “It’s very important that people know they’ve got some place to go and it helps them with their isolation.” “They also don’t have to hear their house for the few hours that they are here.”
Cafe Coordinator Penny told Yorkshire Voice that the cafe is an inclusive environment: “Everyone is welcome to come and eat.”
In 2022, the cafe was awarded The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service which Penny says, “Recognises the value of the cafe to the community.”
This initiative not only reduces food waste, but also fosters a sense of belonging for those who might feel otherwise lonely, especially nearing the holiday season.
