Smallwood in doubt as Hull take on Northampton

Hull could be without experienced captain Richie Smallwood when taking on Northampton this weekend. The defensive lynchpin hobbled off early in the first-half against West Ham.

Since arriving Smallwood has brought an experience and tenacity to Hull City’s midfield which was lacking last year. Youngster Dan Batty is the likely replacement, though he lacks the experience of Smallwood.

Hull City will be looking to keep their 100% win record in League One against the Cobblers. Grant McCann’s side will be looking to bounce back after the Carabao Cup. Whilst Northampton are also unbeaten entering match week three.

For Hull City they are yet to concede a goal entering the third game of the season. Demonstrating a defensive stability which was absent in last season’s relegation. Additionally, Hull strengthened with the addition of pacey winger Hakeeb Adelakun from Bristol City on loan. Adding more weapons offensively for McCann’s side and may be handed a start.

Wilks finally up top

The striker position is a key dilemma for the Tigers, however, winger Malik Wilks has found a scoring touch. Josh Magennis may drop to the bench after starting midweek. Hull will still be without Tom Eaves heading into the weekend, but options are plentiful for McCann.

Northampton have had a plethora of injuries entering the 2020 season. Though, Keith Curle is hopeful he can welcome some players back.

“We are going to get knocks and injuries but that’s why you have a squad and we showed on Saturday that we could still put out a competitive team.” Curle told Northamptonfc.com after his team were victorious last weekend against Shrewsbury on the road.

Northampton have one win and one draw after re-entering league one with promotion last season. Northampton’s direct style may cause City problems in a traditional 4-4-2 showing last week after winning away with only 30% possession. Amongst the goals last week was Northampton’s key man Sam Hoskins who tallied 12 goals last year and will be the biggest threat on Saturday.
