Recent graduate Dylan Maggs has emphasised the importance of social media in his success as a freelance photographer within the music industry.
Appearing at Leeds Trinity University’s Journalism and Media Week, Maggs shared an insight into his career with a group of current students. While he completes a Master’s degree in Photography at Manchester Metropolitan University, Maggs is also employed to take press photos at music events.
When detailing how he accessed these opportunities, Maggs credited his success to his frequent use of social media (such as Instagram and X). While indicating social media’s power, Maggs warned about the importance of shot selection. He said: “Shot selection is not as talked about, but it is very important.”
Maggs expanded on this, telling the audience how social media can be used to demonstrate an artist’s capability. However, it is important not to repeat images and to provide variety and creativity in the shots you display.
While acknowledging the power of social media, Maggs also warned about the consequences of a digital footprint and ensuring that your social platforms represent the image you want employers to see.
He also discussed personal issues regarding using and relying on social media for his career progression. He said, “I’m very in my head about what I post and overthink it all the time.”
The photographer has been hugely successful in his pursuit of a full-time career. He recently covered the Youth Music Awards, a night dedicated to highlighting rising talent in the music sphere.
The event was a huge success, and he gained significant recognition for his photography. However, this was not without its’ own challenges. Maggs said: “The way they laid out the logos was kind of difficult.”
He went on to explain the various complexities in obtaining the perfect shot and ensuring his employer’s briefs are met in their entirety, regardless of any tricky obstacles.
Working as a freelance photographer comes with its’ own complications. Even though freelance has allowed him to continue his studies and be flexible with time, it has been an unreliable source of income. Maggs said: “Most people that work freelance will have to get a part-time job because it’s hard to find a well-paying job in freelance at regular intervals.”
Maggs’ photography style aims to capture the energy of the audience, a feature that has led to his continued success. When questioned further about how he achieves this, he said: “I prefer wide shots, especially at the back of a crowd, because you can capture the energy.”
