A deflected strike in the seventh minute from Léo Scienza was enough for all three points, United pressure proved to be too little too late.
Unlike Saturday’s defeat to Charlton which saw Chris Wilder’s men reduced to nine in the first half, there was real hope of a result on the coast.

The hosts came into the match without a win in seven and sitting just a point above Sheffield United but there would be no bounce back for the Blades, a fifteenth league defeat leaves them in 17th position.
Dominant Saints first half
The match was still waiting to settle into its rhythm before the game’s opening shot turned into the game’s opening goal, Southampton’s Brazilian winger fired past Michael Cooper from the 18 yard line with the help of a deflection.
Momentum remained with the home side until Sheffield United began to find their feet on the counter after a quarter of the game, Tahith Chong lead the way on the right but his cutback was easily stopped by the goalkeeper.
However, the remainder of the first 45 was spent on the back foot, Burrows was lucky to get away with a lazy challenge inside the box on Tom Fellows who opted to stay on his feet.
A minute later it really should have been two, Finn Azaz scuffed a shot wide from close range after a well crafted move.
Sheffield United were struggling to defend the wide areas, neither Burrows or Wolves loanee Ki-Jana Hoever dealt with Southampton’s wide players.
Lacking creative spark
Having been quite fortunate to finish the first half within a goal of the home side, Sheffield United did show signs of life in the second half but struggled to convert it into concrete chances.
Their first shot on target came soon after the break which highlighted the absence of changes created by South Sheffield side.
Cooper was forced into a fine save to keep Scienza’s headed effort out, a save that kept the game alive as far as Sheffield United were concerned.
The biggest moment of the game came in the final minute of the 90, substitute Patrick Bamford cut inside nicely to present himself with a golden chance from 8 yards out but his low effort was saved well by Daniel Peretz.
Travel sickness for the Bladesmen
A tenth away defeat in the league means only West Bromwich Albion have more (11) while a second away match without a goal will be something that cannot turn into a habit for Chris Wilder’s side.
Only four points separate Sheffield United from Blackburn in 22nd and things don’t get any easier, a return to Bramall Lane to face high-flyers Ipswich Town awaits on Saturday.
