Pupils Protest School Bus Cuts Outside Bradford Council

Pupils from St Bede’s and St Joseph’s Catholic School descended on Bradford City Hall to protest against the cancellation of their school buses.

Bradford District Council have proposed cuts to the bus services that around 900 pupils use to get to and from school every day.

Georgie Clayton, parent and ‘Save Our SBSJ School Buses’ campaigner, described the long journey her son would have to take without the dedicated services, getting him to school “an hour before it even starts” on two different public buses.

As reported by the BBC, council leader Susan Hinchcliffe admitted that plans to cancel the buses were “fundamentally all about money”, as part of £40 million cuts to local services.

Nazia Khan, a teacher at the school, described the bus service as a “lifeline to the education our pupils have chosen”.
She said: “We want the council to consider the voices of our children when they’re making these decisions. They are our future, and they need to be heard.”

Around 100 pupils were allowed into Bradford Council’s public gallery on Tuesday, where petitions on the bus cuts were discussed.

The cuts are subject to a public consultation, that closes on December 18th.
