By Matthew Brannen

West Yorkshire Police have explained today why they used a taser to subdue a man in a busy Shipley park last night.

Officers were called to reports of a man firing a gun in Crowgill Park who appeared to be in a distressed state.

Firearms officers responded to the incident and attempted to talk to the man who is in his sixties and was carrying a BB gun.

In a statement West Yorkshire Police said: “The male then suddenly tried to make off from officers and taser was deployed to safely apprehend him.”

“Ambulance staff were contacted and the male was taken to hospital for treatment and further assessment.”
