Old Bar Celebrates 85th Birthday With Student Jazz Party

The University of Leeds Student Union Bar has celebrated its 85th Birthday with a party and live performance from the student jazz band.

The pub celebrated by decorating the bar in ballons as well as other party decorations, and offered exclusive deals on drinks to students attending the event.

Leeds University Unions’ Big Band treated those attending to classic jazz songs such as the Lullaby of Broadway by Al Dubin and Harry Warren, In The Mood by Glen Miller, and many other famous hits.

Alex Beard, a member of staff at Old Bar, spoke to Yorkshire Voice about what makes the place special to students.

He said: “It’s special because its for students in both its activities and it’s a place to work. There’s an environment that’s safe because everyone’s a student.”

Old Bar regularly hosts events for students to come together on campus. These range from live music events, supporting student bands and artists, Premier League games or even coverage of big events such as the US election.

Sali Jarman, bar staff at the pub, emphasised the importance of the student community and explained how the bar tries to reflect that.

She said: “We do a quiz night every Thursday, we sometimes do emo night, and we did a Taylor Swift night recently which was very popular.

“We need to bring students together.”
