George Müller-Waite, the Leeds Green Party’s 2026 candidate for councillor for Little London and Woodhouse, was critical of the state of renting in the ward and promised, if elected, to make changes.
Speaking in an interview with Yorkshire Voice, alongside fellow Green Party campaigner Eden Hills, Müller-Waite said “we have entire estates in Little London that are owned by one or two people,” adding “they’re slum landlords, there is no gentle way to put it.”
He went on to say that “no effort” is put into maintaining the properties in question.
“They really don’t care.”
Out of the 33 wards in Leeds, Little London and Woodhouse has the lowest percentage of houses owned by its tenants at just 13%.
Edward Collins, a Little London and Woodhouse resident, said the heating was broken in his house for months before the landlord organised its repair.
Collins said, “I know lots of people that have had similar issues.”
Both campaigners were vocal about council housing. When speaking about waiting lists, Hills said, “we need to build more social housing, specifically around Little London and Woodhouse, in order to provide for those people.”
The 2026 councillor candidate agreed and said, “we would like all empty council homes in Leeds to be allocated within two months.”
“We don’t think this is a big ask.”
The Green member also referenced the Party’s administration in Bristol and their request to central government for rent controls to be given to local councils, before saying, “a Green administration in Leeds would do the same.”
“Its on central government whether they want to give those powers.”
The candidate hoping for a win in 2026 also found fault with the current management of the ward.
“They don’t engage in issues with private rent.”
He also said, “I’ve been told this is the first time a politician has been and spoken to us,” when visiting residents of the area.
“They’re not doing enough.”
