Now in its second year the Leeds Christmas Market transforms the city into a festive wonderland, drawing thousands of visitors and is a vital part of the city’s strategy for community engagement and the broader goals for Leeds economic growth.
Councillor Jonathan Pryor from Leeds City Council, said: “We know from footfall figures last year people will not only come to these stalls, but they will spend a lot of time in existing markets and businesses as well, so they will add a huge boost to our local businesses and economy.”
Leona Dixon from ‘Pure,’ a stall selling healthy pet treats, said: “It’s been really good to help people recognise us and learn about the products which is really helpful for us.”
The market is also a highlight of the festive season for the community without costing the taxpayer or council any money.
Lisa Bruce from Saltaire took the train in to Leeds to visit the market with her partner, she said; “We think this a great market and its got lots to offer, and spread out, so if you don’t want to go to the rides, you can go to another part for the gifts and food.
Mark Durham, Head of City Centre Management for Leeds City Council explained the many challenges, the need for collaboration with business owners and sponsors, and lengthy planning that goes into to putting on such big events for the city at no cost.
He said: “We have to do this on the basis that it doesn’t cost the council any money, so all of the Christmas offerings haven’t cost the taxpayer a penny. Its challenging to do but that’s what we’ve managed to do for the people of Leeds”.
