How the standards of the mighty Bayern have fallen

  • reporter

Looking at Bayern’s previous seasons and it is clear that there has been a clear drop off in performances, standard, results and players.  A decade ago, the German record champions had players like Bastian Schweinsteiger, Phillip Lahm, Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery, players known as mentality monsters, whereas now, Bayern’s  wingers are not even able to perform in five consecutive games.

In the Champions League, the Germans have already lost three games in seven, although in previous seasons the last group stage game they lost was in 2017 against Paris Saint Germain. Since the sacking of Julian Nagelsmann which shocked the world, it just looks like they have bot improved since. A young manager like Nagelsmann that was chased by top European clubs was left behind the door after one and a half years at the record champions. Now that the German has gotten his hands on the German national team, Bayern are the ones that have been left without ideas.

During his tenure at Bayern the current German national manager had a whopping 71.4% win percentage, winning 60 out of the 84 games that he managed. Now why bring up his stats? The man had a promising squad and known as a tactical young genius about to go up against Pep Guardiola in the Champions League quarter finals, he got sacked. Of course, the decision was being made based on a loss to Leverkusen in the league. Xabi Alonso’s men left FC Bayern no chance and room to breathe which resulted into a 2-1 defeat for the Bavarians. Now although they were only second behind Borussia Dortmund, the Bayern bosses saw the possible “treble” in danger and had to make a decision, which caused Nagelsmann to lose his job. Now his successor Thomas Tuchel didn’t have it any easier during his spell with the German record champions.

The time that Thomas Tuchel had at Bayern was one of the most chaotic tenures in the history of FC Bayern. From former Bayern Munich player and journalist Didi Hamann calling him the “ the biggest misunderstanding since Juergen Klinsmann” simply implementing that his relationship with just wasn’t a good fit. And following the backlash Didi received and Tuchel not commenting on it, he then apologised for the harsh words that were being used. From Didi, we then go to German icon Lothar Matthaeus calling saying “ He always attacks the team. He is actually always the one who doesn’t make mistakes and the players make the mistakes, that he expects more, but maybe the players also expect a bit more from Tuchel.” Also criticising  Tuchels public approach to player management. After taking over from Nagelsmann, in his first few games Tuchel’s Bayern got knocked out from the Champions League by Manchester city and in the cup by Freiburg. But luckily, I guess, he still managed to win the league on the last matchday, with a 89 minute equaliser by Jamal Musiala. Surely the following season will be better. Right?

Well, in the 2023-2024 season, Tuchels last season at Bayern was marked by a series of defeats. Bayern lost approximately one out of every four games, making it 11 losses in 44 games. The German lost three consecutive games in the first few months of 2024 which led to him parting ways with the club in the following summer. Bayern Munich finished third due to losing on the last matchday, ending up behind Stuttgart and Leverkusen going invincible with an incredible season. The team went trophyless for the first time in 12 years and didn’t deliver any silverware to the city of Munich. After Tuchel announced his departure from the club in the summer, the board went for a long search in finding the right man to be his successor and after multiple rejections, the board decided to sign Burnley head coach Vincent Kompany who got relegated with Burnley that same season. Would this be the case five years ago when the mighty Bayern were on top of the world? Of course not.

Bayern under Vincent Kompany have not looked any better really and continue to struggle against tough opponents. In the 2024/2025 season they’ve already lost to teams like, Barcelona and Aston Villa in the Champions League, got knocked out by Leverkusen in the cup and lost to underdogs Feyenoord 3-0 which caused them to find themselves in the play-offs. Now although the season has not ended, we have clearly seen that this is not the same team the fans fell in love with decades ago. Key players like Joshua Kimmich and Jamal Musiala hesitating on extending their contracts, Leroy Sane not performing good enough to earn a contracts extension, then you have players like Serge Gnabry and Leon Goretzka who are one of the top earners at the club but are also one of the most underperforming ones, last but not least, youngsters like Aznou and Mathys Tel wanting to leave the club due to not receiving valuable game time. The standards indeed for a big club as Bayern Munich have massively dropped

It is CHAOS. CHAOS. CHAOS.

What do you think?
