The council has released images of what the new market will look like, providing it gets the go ahead.

Councillor Richard Lewis said: “We’re absolutely clear that we must invest in the market so it can take full advantage of its unique position in Leeds’ retail landscape.

“It would be remiss of us to not invest and pursue the redevelopment of George Street given the opportunity represented by the Victoria Gate development and the millions of predicted visitors.”

The report includes plans to change the market structure and layout as well as announcing which traders will have to relocate as a result of the plans.

Providing the plans get the green light from the council’s executive board, and a contractor is secured for the development, it will be completed for 2016.

A decision will be announced on April 2.
