Wakefield was lit up this weekend to mark the start of the festive season.
The Light Up Wakefield event was kicked off by local celebrity and footballer turned pundit Chris Kamara who pushed the button to turn on a dazzling array of lights.
Kamara emphasised the importance of supporting small local businesses which was met with applause and cheers from the crowd.
“Spend as much money as you can to keep their businesses alive!” he said.
As well as the usual Christmas lights, there was a variety of art installations that lit up buildings across the city.
One of these was seen at the art gallery The Hepworth which was illuminated with a spectacular animation that celebrated 100 years of surrealism.
Local Georgia who brought her nieces to the display said: “It’s such an imaginative concept, it’s so beautiful to watch and it’s great that the kids are here playing and watching.”
The event featured a Christmas market and a busy tipi bar with a live singer.
Although the art installations have gone, the lights will remain up for the rest of the festive season, bringing festive cheer to Wakefield.
