Naz Shah has stated that nobody “should be subjected to racist abuse” in response to a man being sentenced for sending her abuse last year.
In April 2020, former nurse Ian Brown sent the Bradford West MP a racist email regarding her promotion to the Shadow Cabinet, including racial slurs and derogatory language.
In her response, Shah also emphasised her openness towards debate, but this email was not just a disagreement.
In a statement to Yorkshire Voice Shah said: “No public servant should have to be subjected to abuse of any kind as they go about their work.
“I welcome debate, which can be and should be robust, and I fully accept that people will not always agree.
“But no one should be subjected to racist abuse.”
Shah also said: “This sends a strong message that such a hate crime will not be tolerated.”
“I’d like to thank the police and CPS for the work they have done and all their support”, she added.
Brown was given a suspended prison sentence yesterday.
