Top 10 viral trends in social media lockdown so far

By Kudzai Chinembiri

  1. Dalgona Coffee – Almost everyone I follow on Instagram joined this trend; this special coffee is a combination of icy milk at the bottom and a whipped instant coffee mix at the top. Sounds futile but makes for some incredible Instagram content.

  2. Instagram Lives – This has been a current trend in pop culture but many of us have been taking part in going live on Instagram. Celebrities like Miley Cyrus, Tory Lanez and Justin Bieber have made it an occurring thing to go live and discuss serious or light-hearted topics.

  3. Makeup Challenges – the don’t rush makeup challenge dominated Instagram. With celebrities, influencers and even NHS staff joining in.

  4. Tie Dying clothes – This spring we are welcoming back our old friend tie dye, many of us have decided to get stuck into some arts and crafts to help get through self-isolation. Tie-dying clothes has become popular again, but not only in your favourite fast-fashion websites but as a fun at-home activity. It’s so easy to try – just grab some bleach, dilute it with water in some washing up liquid and start tie-dying away.
  5. Jigsaw puzzles – Jigsaw puzzles have been around for a very long time, but most of us are only getting around to starting/completing them now. Though jumping on this trend might be hard now since almost all the puzzles online are sold out!

  6. Netflix’s Tiger King Documentary – One of Netflix’s most-watched crime documentaries caught the eye of many people as soon as it was released on March 20. This true-crime series saw viewers take to Twitter to express their feeling and opinions on it. And yes, another Tiktok challenge was created from this… all I’m going to say is CAROLE BASKIN.

  7. Tiktok dance challenges – it is no secret the app Tiktok has become an absolute phenomenon in the younger generation. This app has allowed users to partake in viral dance challenges like the “#savagechallenge.”

  9. Baking – I mean since lockdown everyone has become the best bakers I have ever seen, if you are not baking in self isolation then you are certainly doing something wrong. There are thousands of easy recipes for you to follow online, go ahead and start indulging in some homemade sweet treats. Here’s a link to one of my favourite websites for baking goodies: https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/collection/easy-baking
