A vegan cafe in Horsforth has launched a series of workshops to educate people about eating a plant-based diet and the positive impact this can have on the environment.

At the start of October, a meeting was held with businesses and community hub members of Horsforth to explore how the town can commit to reducing climate change.

Richard Revill, age 37, manager and owner of The Greenhouse used the opportunity to explain the vision behind opening the café and why he feels so passionately about reducing climate change.

The Greenhouse ran the first workshop last week which opened as a taster for what is to come over the next couple of months. Richard explained that he wanted to use this initial session to determine what people wanted to get out of the sessions and what things would be most useful for him to cover.

He said: “I plan to focus the upcoming sessions on various different aspects of vegan food and how it can be accessible to everyone. We will go over simple and quick meal ideas that are good for cooking for families and on a budget.”

Situated on Town Street in Horsforth, The Greenhouse café has been open since October 2018 and as the first fully vegan establishment in Horsforth aims to promote an environmentally conscious lifestyle.

Leeds City Council has committed to making Leeds carbon neutral by 2030. The council has devised a plan which focuses on building sustainable infrastructure, tackling pollution, lowering carbon emissions and promoting a plastic free way of living.

Schemes such as the Clean Air Zone, Connecting Leeds and Leeds by Example are leading the way in looking at the issue of climate change.

Annie Goodwin, 22 from Horsforth who attended the first workshop by The Greenhouse said: “I really enjoyed the first session and as a vegan myself it helped me to remember how I can make this lifestyle change not seem as daunting as it might to others.”
