Leeds celebrates St Patrick’s Day after two years of cancellations

Hundreds of people gathered in the streets of Leeds on Sunday to celebrate St Patrick’s Day, marking one of the first major events in the city since the beginning of Covid.

The event began with a parade full of flags, floats and festivity which toured the city – starting in Millennium Square.

This was followed by entertainment on the stage in the Square that lasted until 4pm, with food and drinks stalls also providing refreshments.

Seán Fleming, Minister of State at the Department of Finance for the Irish Government, told Yorkshire Voice: “I’m really taken aback by the massive crowd – there are so many people!

“It’s absolutely fantastic to have different nationalities here joining with the Irish community as well.

“This event is a really big achievement for Leeds.”

The prize of the best float in the parade was awarded to Leeds Irish Health and Homes, an organisation who provide support to the Irish community who live in the city.

St Patrick’s Day is on Thursday 17th March 2022.
