Key players set to return for Posh for Gillingham visit

By Charlie Russell

Peterborough United will look to regain their early season form with a win this weekend as they welcome Gillingham to London Road.

Grant McCann confirmed that star players, Gwion Edwards and Marcus Maddison returned to training today following on from not featuring in last week’s Checkatrade Trophy defeat to Northampton.

“We’ve missed Gwion, he gives us that something a bit different. He carries the ball well at good pace so he’s been a hard man to replace,” said McCann in Peterborough Today.

“Marcus will also resume training. He’s been playing with a slight problem in the last few games so the rest will have done him so good. Hopefully all the lads will feel refreshed as we have a tough run of games coming up.”

Recent form for the Posh has been inconsistent with just one win in their last five in all competitions. However, this hasn’t affected their promotion hopes as they currently sit fifth with 20 points.

Managerless Gillingham desperately need the points on offer this weekend if they want to make it out of the relegation zone without embarrassment. They currently find themselves with just seven points to their name after 12 games.

The Gills’ last and only league win came against Charlton on 16th September with former Bolton Wanderers striker Tom Eaves providing the only goal.

Gabriel Zakuani is set to return for Caretaker manager, Peter Taylor’s side after being away on international duty with DR Congo.

The experienced defender will return to London Road on the back of three separate spells with Peterborough, where he made over 220 league appearances before departing for rivals, Northampton in 2016.
