A blaze ripped through a storage building in Wortley this morning, destroying the inside.

Leeds fire service responded to an emergency call at 3am from Oldfield lane in Wortley near The New Conservative Pub.

Four fire engines attended, two from Hunslet and two from Leeds as well as an aerial ladder platform.

Watch Commander Phil Rhodes of Leeds Fire Service arrived on scene to relieve firemen who had been working for five hours to control the blaze. He said: “When the first team arrived just after 3 am it was a well established fire. When my team got there at 8 am, it was still smouldering.”

The building is adjoined to Leeds West Physique Gym in Wortley.

Mr Rhodes added: “We managed to stop it spreading to the gym, but everything inside the building was completely destroyed. The three stories collapsed into one.”

It is understood that no one was the building or injured in the blaze.

Oliver Thornton 31,  is the owner of the building and the adjoining gym.

He said: “The fire brigade have done a fantastic job because we could have lost the other half . It could have been worse. The gym is still open.”

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
